Indian Presentation Flag, c. 1803–1812

This Lewis and Clark flag represents an Indian Presentation flag of the early 19th century, of the type that may have been carried by the Corps of Discovery during their historic expedition. According to noted flag historian Howard Madaus, this style of flag was reportedly presented by Andrew Jackson to Chief Sheboy-way, reflecting the U.S. government’s practice of gifting flags to Native American leaders as symbols of diplomacy and alliance.

The flag features 17 stars, representing the original 13 states plus Vermont (1791), Kentucky (1792), Tennessee (1796), and Ohio (1803), all of which had joined the Union by 1803. It displays an incongruous 15 stripes, a reminder of a transitional period in American flag design. At the time, Congress had not yet standardized the relationship between stars and stripes—a matter not formally resolved until the Flag Act of 1818, signed by James Monroe.

Flags of this era varied widely in appearance, and this 17-star, 15-stripe configuration is considered a typical design in use between 1803 and 1812. The Lewis and Clark Expedition, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, took place from May 14, 1804, to September 26, 1806, placing this flag squarely within the period of their journey.
