This flag is associated with John Sullivan, a prominent New Hampshire lawyer, patriot, and military leader during the American Revolution. Sullivan served as a member of both the First and Second Continental Congress before emerging as an early militia commander at the outbreak of the war.

He was appointed Brigadier General during the Siege of Boston, and was later selected by George Washington to command the ill-fated invasion of Canada. Sullivan subsequently became one of the senior commanders during the Battle of Long Island, one of the most devastating American defeats of the war. There, his forces were attacked simultaneously from both front and rear, resulting in intense hand-to-hand fighting in which much of his command was destroyed. Sullivan himself was captured during the battle.

After being released in a prisoner exchange, Sullivan returned to active service and fought alongside Washington at Trenton and Princeton, contributing to the revival of the American cause. Later in the war, he commanded the controversial scorched-earth campaign against the Iroquois in western New York, aimed at disrupting British-allied Native American support.
