The 2nd Corps of the Union Army saw extensive combat throughout the Civil War. It was engaged at the Battle of Seven Pines, the Seven Days Battles, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Chancellorsville, and Battle of Gettysburg.
At Gettysburg, the Corps played a decisive role in repulsing Pickett’s Charge, holding the Union center during one of the most critical moments of the battle. At the time, the 2nd Corps was commanded by Winfield Scott Hancock, whose leadership earned him lasting recognition as one of the Union Army’s most respected commanders.
