Think of the Latin phrase found on the Great Seal and the back of the dollar bill: E Pluribus Unum — “Out of Many, One.” Few symbols were more meaningful to the early Republic than the chain-link motif, representing individual states joined together to form a strong and unified whole.

The flag was captured by British General Burgoyne at Fort Anne, New York, and the regiment went on to see action at Saratoga and Monmouth, two critical engagements in the struggle for independence.
