Think of the Latin phrase found on the Great Seal and the back of the dollar bill: E Pluribus Unum — “Out of Many, One.” Few symbols were more meaningful to the early Republic than the chain-link motif, representing individual states joined together to form a strong and unified whole.

This powerful imagery appeared widely in early American life—on the first regular-issue U.S. coins, on the Senate carpet in Congress Hall during the Philadelphia capital years (1790–1800), and in contemporary prints and artwork. It expressed a central question of the age: Could the new Union survive under the Constitution?

Remarkably, the 10th Massachusetts Regiment was already using this symbol during the Revolutionary War, well before the nation’s future was assured. The regiment’s flag, featuring the chain-link design, embodied the idea of unity through shared purpose.

The flag was captured by British General Burgoyne at Fort Anne, New York, and the regiment went on to see action at Saratoga and Monmouth, two critical engagements in the struggle for independence.

The 10th Massachusetts flag stands as an early and eloquent visual statement of the American experiment—many colonies, one nation—expressed on the battlefield before it was fully realized in law.
