The 20th New York Infantry Regiment was composed largely of German-American volunteers, many recruited from New York City’s Lower East Side and East Village, areas with strong and active immigrant communities at the outbreak of the Civil War.
The regiment served in the Eastern Theater and is best remembered for its participation in the Battle of Antietam in September 1862, one of the bloodiest single days in American history. Like many ethnically based regiments, the 20th New York combined strong cultural identity with disciplined military service.
The regimental flag represents the pride, sacrifice, and contribution of German-American soldiers who answered the call to preserve the Union during the nation’s greatest crisis.
