Can I fly a second flag on my pole?
In many cases, yes—but it’s important to understand what your flagpole is designed to handle. Every pole is engineered for a specific flag size and load, and like any outdoor product, it can be affected by weather and use. Adding a second flag increases stress on the pole, so a little planning and common-sense care go a long way toward protecting your investment.
If you choose to fly two flags, we recommend keeping these practical guidelines in mind:
-
Adjust for weather conditions
Wind, rain, and ice all increase the load on a flagpole. During storms or periods of high wind, it’s wise to remove one or both flags. Even a single flag can place added stress on a pole during severe weather. -
Use smaller flag sizes
If your pole is intended for a 3′ × 5′ flag, consider flying a smaller second flag—such as a 2′ × 3’—or using two smaller flags instead of two full-size flags. -
Choose lightweight materials
Nylon flags are the best option for multiple-flag displays. They are lighter than cotton or polyester and shed water more easily, reducing strain on the pole. -
Properly display burial (interment) flags
Burial flags hold deep sentimental value, but their large 5 × 9½’ size makes them unsuitable for standard residential flagpoles. We recommend preserving these flags in a triangular display case or, for special occasions, hanging them vertically without a pole.
Many customers do successfully fly a second flag, and we’re always happy to advise you on what your specific pole is designed to support. If you plan to add another flag, you’ll need an additional pair of snap hooks. These poles come standard with Minuteman snap hooks, which are available at $1.75 each. Having an extra pair on hand as spares is also convenient.
The good news is that, in the rare event that a pole section is damaged, replacement sections are readily available. This is something most big-box retailers don’t offer. While any flagpole can be affected by extreme conditions, we stand behind our products and work to provide long-term support and replacement parts when needed.
If you ever have questions about sizing, materials, or setup, we’re here to help you choose the safest and best option for your display.
