The 9th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment was one of the earliest and most prominent Irish-American regiments to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War. Organized in Boston in 1861, the regiment was composed largely of Irish immigrants and first-generation Irish-Americans, many of whom had arrived in the United States only years earlier.
The 9th Massachusetts served primarily in the Eastern Theater, where it quickly earned a reputation for discipline, courage, and hard fighting. The regiment saw action in the Peninsula Campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, often sustaining heavy casualties. Although not permanently assigned to the Irish Brigade in the same way as the 28th Massachusetts or 69th New York, it was widely regarded as part of the broader Irish Brigade tradition due to its composition and esprit de corps.
The regiment’s service reflected the strong sense of loyalty felt by many Irish immigrants, who viewed military service as both a defense of their adopted country and a statement of their place within American society.
The 9th Massachusetts stands as a powerful example of the vital role played by Irish soldiers in preserving the Union and shaping the nation during the Civil War.
