The “Dont Give Up the Ship” flag is famously associated with Oliver Hazard Perry, a hero of the War of 1812. The phrase was the dying command of Perry’s close friend James Lawrence, mortally wounded in 1813 aboard the USS Chesapeake during a battle with the British.

Perry adopted the words as a battle flag and flew it from his flagship during the Battle of Lake Erie. When his ship was disabled under heavy fire, Perry famously carried the flag by boat through enemy fire to another vessel, where he continued the fight and secured a decisive American victory. Afterward, he reported: “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”

The Commodore Perry flag became a lasting symbol of naval courage, perseverance, and refusal to surrender, and remains one of the most powerful mottos in American naval history.
