The Lord Baltimore Flag is derived from the heraldic arms of the Calvert family, founders and proprietors of the colony of Maryland. The design combines the black-and-gold vertical stripes of the Calvert family with the diagonal black-and-gold pattern traditionally associated with the Crossland family, into which the Calverts married.
The flag is named for Cecil Calvert, known as Lord Baltimore, who established Maryland in the 17th century as a haven for religious tolerance. While not a national or military flag in the modern sense, the design became a powerful regional symbol and later formed the basis of Maryland’s modern state flag.
Today, the Lord Baltimore flag represents colonial heritage, proprietary government, and the unique identity of Maryland, making it one of the most distinctive and enduring flag designs in American history.
