Viking Raven Flag — History, Myth, and Clarification

The so-called Viking Raven Flag is one of the most misunderstood historical flags in popular culture. Thanks to correspondence with Michael Faul, editor of Flagmaster, the journal of The Flag Institute, we can clarify what this flag was—and was not.

What the Raven Flag Was Not

The Raven Flag was not a national flag in the modern sense, nor was it a universal banner carried by all Vikings. Despite common belief, there is no evidence that figures such as Erik the Red or Leif Erikson carried this flag to Vinland or elsewhere.

What the Evidence Shows

Historical references to raven banners are extremely rare—recorded only five times—and always in connection with specific leaders, not nations. The designs likely varied considerably. In one account, the flag was even described as “magical,” with the raven appearing only when flown in battle.

The only confirmed reference outside the British Isles involves Harald Hardrada, who carried a raven banner known as “Landwaster.” That banner did not bring him victory—Hardrada was defeated and killed at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066, the last known historical mention of such a flag.
