General Schuyler’s Flag

As low as:

$89.00

Philip John Schuyler began his military career as a captain in British forces during the French and Indian War. After the war, he returned to New York, where his estate developed into a vast agricultural, lumber, and milling enterprise encompassing thousands of acres and operated with enslaved labor, reflecting the economic realities of the period.

Schuyler entered public life as a member of the New York Colonial Assembly, where he emerged as a vocal opponent of British colonial rule. He was elected to the Second Continental Congress, but resigned his seat upon receiving a commission as a Major General in the Continental Army.

As commander of the Northern Department, Schuyler was responsible for the initial defense against the British invasion of New York led by John Burgoyne. Early British successes led to Schuyler being replaced by Horatio Gates, who accused him of dereliction of duty. Schuyler demanded a court-martial and was fully exonerated, but he nevertheless resigned his command.

Despite this setback, Schuyler continued to serve the revolutionary cause in civilian roles and remained a respected political figure. He is also remembered as the father-in-law of Alexander Hamilton, one of the most influential figures of the American Revolution and early United States.
