The Washington’s Cruisers Flag — Version 2 is a historically informed interpretation associated with George Washington and the small naval force he authorized in 1775 to disrupt British shipping during the early months of the American Revolution. The flag features a pine tree and the motto “An Appeal to Heaven,” a phrase drawn from the writings of philosopher John Locke, expressing the colonies’ belief that justice rested ultimately with divine authority.
As with many Revolutionary-era flags, no original Washington’s Cruisers flag is known to survive. Period references and later descriptions suggest more than one possible design was used. For that reason, we offer two historically plausible versions, each reflecting how the flag may have appeared based on available evidence and scholarship.
This version represents one of those interpretations and honors the spirit of resistance, maritime warfare, and moral resolve that defined Washington’s early naval efforts.
