The British Union Flag, commonly known as the Union Jack, is the national flag of United Kingdom. Its design combines the crosses of three patron saints: the red cross of St. George (England), the white saltire of St. Andrew (Scotland), and the red saltire of St. Patrick (Ireland).

First created in 1606 following the union of the English and Scottish crowns, the flag was later modified in 1801 to reflect the political union with Ireland. The Union Flag became a powerful symbol of British authority, naval power, and empire, and it appears prominently on many colonial and early American flags from the Revolutionary period.
