The Rhode Island Regiment is widely recognized as the first all-Black military unit in American history. Formed during the American Revolutionary War, the regiment distinguished itself through disciplined service and battlefield courage at a time when African American participation in the military was rare and often contested.
The regiment saw action in multiple campaigns and is especially noted for its role at Siege of Yorktown, where its soldiers took part in the assault on Redoubt No. 10, a decisive action that helped force the British surrender and effectively end the war.
The Rhode Island Regiment stands as a powerful symbol of African American patriotism, sacrifice, and service, earning a respected place in the history of the Revolution and the founding of the United States.
