The 5th Corps of the Union Army initially served under Nathaniel P. Banks, opposing Stonewall Jackson during his famed Shenandoah Valley Campaign. The Corps later took part in the Peninsula Campaign aimed at capturing Richmond and saw heavy action at the Second Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Antietam, and Battle of Fredericksburg.
After George G. Meade was promoted to command the Army of the Potomac, George Sykes assumed command of the 5th Corps. Under his leadership, the Corps fought at Battle of Gettysburg, where it was heavily engaged in the Wheatfield.
“Stand Firm, Ye Men of Maine”
One of the most celebrated moments in 5th Corps history came when the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment was ordered to defend the exposed hill known as Little Round Top. Holding the extreme left flank of the Union line, their position was critical—failure would have allowed Confederate forces to roll up the Union Army’s flank and potentially collapse the entire Army of the Potomac.
Facing repeated assaults by the determined men of William C. Oates and the 15th Alabama, the 20th Maine—commanded by Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain—held their ground. Their stand culminated in a legendary downhill bayonet charge, one of the defining moments of the battle.
This heroic action is famously depicted in The Killer Angels and the film Gettysburg, securing the 5th Corps and the 20th Maine a permanent place in American military history.
