The Second Confederate National Flag, often called the “Stainless Banner,” was adopted by the Confederate States of America in May 1863. The design featured a large white field with the Confederate battle flag placed in the canton. This flag was intended to distinguish the national flag from the U.S. Stars and Stripes, which had caused confusion on Civil War battlefields.
The extensive white field was meant to symbolize what its designers described as purity and independence, though in practice it created problems. When hanging limp or viewed at a distance, the flag could be mistaken for a flag of truce or surrender, leading to criticism and eventual modification.
Because of this issue, a third national flag was later adopted in 1865, adding a vertical red stripe at the fly end to prevent misidentification. Despite its flaws, the Second Confederate National Flag remains one of the most recognizable and historically significant flags of the Confederacy, representing the mid-war period of the Southern government.
