The 37th New York Infantry Regiment, often associated with New York’s Irish volunteer community and sometimes linked in memory with the Irish Brigade, was organized in 1861 in New York City. The regiment was composed largely of Irish immigrants and Irish-Americans, reflecting the strong Irish presence in the city at the outbreak of the Civil War.

The 37th served with distinction in the Eastern Theater, seeing heavy combat in some of the war’s most important engagements. Its service included participation in the Peninsula Campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and later operations leading into the Overland and Petersburg campaigns.

Like many Irish units, the regiment developed a reputation for tenacity under fire and suffered significant casualties throughout the war. The men of the 37th New York fought from the early campaigns through the final year of the conflict and were mustered out in 1865.

The regiment stands as a testament to the vital role played by Irish soldiers in the Union Army and their lasting contribution to the preservation of the United States.
