Bedford Flag

The Bedford Flag is widely regarded as the oldest surviving American battle flag. It was carried by minutemen from Bedford to the Concord Bridge on April 19, 1775, the first day of the American Revolutionary War.

The dramatic design depicts an armored arm emerging from clouds, grasping a sword, with a Latin motto reading “Vince Aut Morire”—“Conquer or Die.” The bold imagery and uncompromising message perfectly reflect the resolve of the colonial militia at the moment armed resistance began.

Unlike most modern flags, the Bedford Flag is not a standard 3′ × 5′ size. The original measures approximately 36″ × 45″, a proportion typical of 18th-century militia colors rather than later standardized flags.

Today, the original flag is preserved and displayed at the Bedford Free Public Library, where it remains one of the most powerful surviving symbols of America’s fight for independence.
