The Bucks of America was a Revolutionary War–era regiment from Boston, composed primarily of African American soldiers. The unit is notable for its service during the war and for the recognition it received at a time when Black military service was often overlooked.
This flag was presented to the regiment by John Hancock, Governor of Massachusetts and a prominent patriot leader. The banner bears the initials “J.G.W.H.”, the precise meaning of which remains uncertain. A commonly cited explanation—referenced by Wikipedia—suggests the letters may stand for John George Washington Hancock, the governor’s son, who may have served as the regiment’s symbolic mascot.
The Bucks of America flag stands as an important symbol of African American participation in the fight for independence and of early recognition of their service by Revolutionary leaders.
