The “Come and Take It” Flag is one of the most iconic symbols of early Texas resistance. It originated in Battle of Gonzales, often considered the opening engagement of the Texas Revolution. The flag features a black cannon, a single star, and the defiant challenge “Come and Take It.”

The message was directed at Mexican authorities who demanded the return of a small cannon previously loaned to the settlers of Gonzales for defense against Native raids. Rather than surrender the cannon, the settlers raised this flag and prepared to resist, signaling their refusal to submit.

Inspired by the ancient phrase “Molon Labe”, the Come and Take It flag has become a lasting emblem of self-defense, resistance, and determination. It remains one of the most recognized and powerful flags in Texas and American history.
