Domari Nolo Flag

“I Refuse to Be Subjugated”

Domari Nolo—Latin for “I Refuse to Be Subjugated”—perfectly captures the spirit of the men who carried this flag. And refuse they did.

This unit was everywhere the Continental Army fought. They played a key role during Siege of Boston, covered the army’s desperate retreat from Battle of Long Island—remaining behind until the last possible moment—and crossed the Delaware River with George Washington. They fought at Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and virtually every major skirmish and battle leading to Yorktown, where Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben credited them with playing “the most important part of the siege.” These men witnessed Cornwallis’s surrender at Yorktown, and this flag was there. Few units can claim combat service in all thirteen original colonies—this one can.

Who Were They?

The initials “P.M. 1st Rt” are commonly interpreted as “Pennsylvania Militia, 1st Regiment.” However, this designation is misleading. These riflemen were not militia in the usual sense. They were authorized directly by the Continental Congress, which ordered companies of Pennsylvania riflemen to be raised and formed into a rifle battalion, independent of Pennsylvania’s state government.

The confusion over names stems from an early Continental Army reorganization on January 1, 1776, when Thompson’s Rifle Battalion became the First Continental Regiment. The flag itself is believed to have been created after March 8, 1776. As a result, the unit may be found under several names in historical sources, including:

  • Thompson’s Rifles

  • The Pennsylvania Battalion of Riflemen

  • The First Continental Regiment

Ongoing Research & the Flag

This flag is an excellent example of how ongoing scholarship continues to refine our understanding of Revolutionary War flags. A particularly insightful study by David Sisca—“Standard of the First Regiment of the Continental Line of The United States of America, Formerly Thompson’s Pennsylvania Rifle Battalion”—offers a thorough analysis of this banner and the unit behind it.

For many years, this flag was produced by the now-defunct Dettra Flag Company, which even offered it in both nylon and cotton. After Dettra ceased operations, collectors repeatedly requested its return, but no other manufacturer reproduced it—until now. Drawing on modern research, we have brought this historic flag back as a stock item, rendered in what is now understood to be the most historically accurate version.

This is a flag that represents relentless service, uncompromising resolve, and a refusal—absolute and unwavering—to be subjugated.
