The Fort Moultrie Flag is associated with Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island, the site of a pivotal early American victory in the Revolutionary War. On June 28, 1776, American forces defending the unfinished fort successfully repelled a powerful British naval assault during the Battle of Sullivan’s Island.
The flag is traditionally depicted with a dark blue field bearing a white crescent, a symbol long associated with South Carolina troops. When the fort’s original flag was shot down during the battle, Sergeant William Jasper famously retrieved it under fire and remounted it, an act that became one of the Revolution’s earliest legends of heroism.
The victory at Fort Moultrie helped protect Charleston from capture, boosted Patriot morale, and contributed to the decision to include South Carolina’s crescent device in later state symbolism. The Fort Moultrie Flag stands as a symbol of defiance, courage, and the colonies’ ability to defeat British naval power at a critical moment just days before the Declaration of Independence.
