The flag commonly known today as the Grand Union Flag is more accurately referred to as the Continental Colors. As noted by flag historian Peter Ansoff, “The name Grand Union was retroactively created by 19th-century historians to describe the Continental Colors.” This clarification appears in end note #15 of his article “A Striped Ensign in Philadelphia in 1754,” published in RAVEN, Vol. 15 by North American Vexillological Association.
The Continental Colors combined thirteen red and white stripes—representing the colonies—with a British Union canton, reflecting the political reality of late 1775: the colonies were united in resistance but had not yet declared independence from Great Britain. The flag symbolized colonial unity while still acknowledging ties to the Crown.
As Ansoff further notes in end note #2 of the same paper, “There is no official record of when, or by whom, the Continental Colors was created; however, the earliest known description is believed to have been written in early December, 1775.” The flag is traditionally associated with George Washington and is believed to have been raised at Cambridge, Massachusetts, near the start of the Revolutionary War.
The Continental Colors stands as a transitional American flag, marking the moment when the colonies acted together militarily and politically—just months before independence would be formally declared.
