The Serapis Flag is traditionally associated with John Paul Jones and the famous naval battle of 1779 between the American warship Bonhomme Richard and the British HMS Serapis. The flag is notable for its unusual red, white, and blue striping and its distinctive star arrangement, reflecting the experimental and non-standard nature of early American flag designs.
Following his victory over Serapis, Jones reportedly flew a flag of this general pattern, making it one of the earliest banners associated with an American naval triumph. The Serapis Flag symbolizes the emergence of the United States as a fighting naval power and is closely linked to Jones’s immortal declaration during the battle: “I have not yet begun to fight.”
This flag stands as a striking reminder of the improvisation, courage, and determination that defined the Continental Navy during the American Revolution.
