The Stars & Bars was the first national flag of the Confederate States of America, officially adopted in March 1861. Its design—three horizontal stripes of red, white, and red with a blue canton bearing white stars—was intended to symbolize the Southern states that seceded from the Union. The number of stars changed as additional states joined the Confederacy. Although later replaced due to battlefield confusion with the U.S. flag, the Stars & Bars remains an important historical emblem of the Confederacy’s earliest period.
