The 52nd New York Infantry Regiment was organized in New York City in late 1861 and mustered into Union service in early 1862. The regiment was composed largely of German-American volunteers, a reflection of New York’s strong immigrant communities during the Civil War.

The 52nd served primarily in the Eastern Theater, where it participated in some of the war’s most significant campaigns and battles. Its service included actions at Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the Overland Campaign, followed by the long and brutal Siege of Petersburg. The regiment was present at the Appomattox Campaign, witnessing the final collapse of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.

Known for its discipline and endurance, the 52nd New York Infantry experienced heavy casualties over the course of the war, a testament to its repeated engagement in front-line combat. The regiment was mustered out in July 1865, having served from the early struggles of the conflict through its decisive conclusion.

The 52nd New York stands as an example of the crucial role played by immigrant soldiers in preserving the Union and shaping American history.
