The Taunton Flag is one of the earliest known American protest flags and is associated with Taunton in the opening days of the American Revolution. Featuring a red field, a British Union canton, and the bold inscription “Liberty and Union,” the flag reflects the colonists’ early position in 1774–1775—asserting their rights as Englishmen while still professing loyalty to the Crown.
Rather than calling for independence outright, the Taunton Flag expressed resistance to Parliamentary overreach and a demand for the restoration of traditional liberties. It captures a critical moment when Americans sought reform and justice before the final break with Great Britain, making it a powerful symbol of the Revolution’s transitional phase.
